She's Here!

12 Jan 2009
Finally, the day to see the little one has arrived. Put off by a cold since last week so Dr Chan advised to induce next mon, 12 Jan. PWJ has been so excited.

645am - we reached Thomson Labour Ward while PWJ do admission procedures.

700am - @Delivery Room 7, i was given a blue hospital garb to don and nurse proceed to shave (!) me, weird feeling and given enema to clear my bowels, i endured for close to 5mins before dashing off to the toilet. I was put on a drip on my right hand, it was so bloody painful, i wondered how my mum and other folks who have to endure such pain when they go thru operations. Dr Chan came, checked and burst my waterbag and found myself sitting in a pool of water, i'm only dilated 1cm, gotta wait to full dilation (1cm per hr) till 8 or 9pm..gosh so long
830am - I chickened out and opt for an epidural jab just as i encountered a contraction which was painless, just a feeling of discomfort. I braced myself for the jab and it's not too bad, just a deeper ant prick to the back. My legs felt like puppets and dead wood, numb to the touch.

9am - I slept, thinking its a long wait
11am - I woke up to discover some pressure on my rectum, pressed for nurse and she checked, i'm actually 8cm and baby is progressing well! i got excited..

12pm - still waiting for doctor and nurse to come. slept again

130pm - suddenly doctor and nurse came and immediately told me to push. so i pushed lor...for a full hour before lil one popped out!

basically i have a rather painless and good experience birth, with minimal epidural and trouble-free. but wat i hated is how 'un-natural' and 'medically reliant' hospital is getting. i wanted a natural birth with no/minimal drugs but instead i hv 2 drips (one to keep me hydrated, one to induced brith), epidural, catheter and all other nonsense, blood pressure monitor, measure temperature/baby's heartbeat/contractions....

felt fine and just a little sore below, the drip was painful. then the influx of visitors came in streams over the next 2 days, was so touched by the many well-wishes and gifts, we have to call for a porter to cart out stuff to the car and it filled the 3-tier trolley to the max...

Second Trimester

I survived! I regained my bounce and smile at the 4th month, and happily we took our long awaited holiday (aka honeymoon) to Hua Hin, Aleenta. I gained 3kg and my slight baby bump is showing but overall, i still look thin, i gain back to my normal pale as white (until it reflect light as PWJ puts it) skin tone which i have seen for 10 over yrs since secondary school days before i took up sports. I enjoyed myself tremendously at Aleenta, lazing at the comfy hut, eating food tt i love with great appetite improvement.

I love the way how PWJ holds the baby bump and communicate to the little one inside. With the bump, i said goodbye to my fav "sleeping-on-my-stomach" position and have to make do with right, back and left side positions. I slept at 8pm everyday during the hols and wake up at 7am to a delicious morning by the beach.

Things i have to give up since i'm pregnant
Stretching vigorously at the waist, lats, back, stomach,
Crack my backbones,
Indulge in salmon sashimi,
Drink a full cup of coffee & tea daily,
Enjoy my weekly/ monthly deep tissue sports/tuina massage

Things i cant do without feeling tired
Standing in a mrt for more than 10mins
Walk long distance for lunch/ weekend ECP walks (i can only do 1-1.5 hr of leisure walk max)
Staying awake past 10pm
Climb 3 flight of stairs to my bedroom
Squat and come up efficiently
Withstand a 2hr long meeting looking intelligent

First Trimester

Still coming to terms on my pregnancy, all the morning sickness kicked in big-time. I was nausea at work, lethargic, sleepy to the extend i took afternn naps for 20mins during lunch, vomit morning/afternn/evening violently, loss of appetite, tired and sleep at 9pm everyday. I hated this period as i felt weak and cant do much.

PWJ has been super nice, ferrying me up and down to/frm work and accommodating me as much as he can. It was weird that i looked forward to the monthly gynae visits so I can hear from Dr Yvonne Chan that whatever i was experiencing is normal for every pregnant mother and will pass from the 4th month on. It was always a thrill to do the ultrasound with PWJ around and we share the moment of relishing that baby has grown from 10mm to 5 cm to 10 cm and hear the heartbeat, see the swishing movements that the baby is making.

I lost weight by the 3rd month and look haggard, tired and none of the "pregnant mother glow". and slowly i cant wear most of my fitted working and casual clothes as my waist starts expanding...

As sweet as usual, PWJ bought books on What to Expect when You are Expecting and it proves to be an enjoyable and educational read on preparing for pregnancy and how the body changes. its a science and art at the same time. One good online resource is babycentre.com where there's week by week progress.

As sudden as all my symptoms, i turned needy and wanted PWJ to be with me all the time and poor him gotta cope with his new study term (for the next 3 yrs) and work (in Jurong), ferry me from work (Shenton Way) back home (Srgn Gardens).
